What is a clinical psychologist and how does this differ from a counsellor and Psychiatrist?+
A clinical psychologist works with people with a wide range of mental or physical health problems. They aim to reduce psychological distress and promote psychological well-being. They are highly trained undertaking both an undergraduate degree and doctorate qualification. They are registered with the Health Care Professional Council (HCPC) which provides them with a protected title. All clinical psychologists must adhere to guidance surrounding ethics, safe practice, receive regular supervision and continue to develop their knowledge and skills; this allows their title to be maintained. Clinical psychologists are highly trained in a number of psychological models and approaches which allows them to integrate the most appropriate methods to deliver therapy tailored purely to the individual's needs.
A counsellor often works with individuals to provide guidance and advice on personal or more immediate psychological issues such as relationships difficulties. Clinical psychologists tend to work with individuals who have more long standing difficulties.
A Psychiatrist is a qualified medical doctor who can diagnose mental health problems and also prescribe medication; they do not regularly provide therapy.
